Summer is here, and with it arrives the fun of summer entertaining. Whether it’s a dinner party, a barbecue, or simply sitting out on the patio chatting with friends, summer gatherings are enhanced by refreshing, fun food and beverage choices. While a chilled bottle of wine is nice, a pitcher of sangria is even nicer for an informal get together.
Sangria is a fruity wine punch, which has enjoyed long popularity in Spain where it first originated. Its simplicity and adaptability, and its seasonal appeal have spread around the world.
It’s easy to make, and it’s light, fruity taste is appealing even to those who may not normally enjoy wine. And white wine sangria is particularly popular for summer gatherings, and has a milder influence from the wine which makes it enjoyable by a wider range of guests.
To make a simple white wine sangria, all you need is a few oranges, lemons, and limes, a bottle of Riesling, 2/3 c sugar, ½ a liter of ginger ale or club soda, and a large pitcher of ice. Cut the fruit into wedges and squeeze the juice into the pitcher. Toss the fruit wedges in, and add the wine and club soda. Stir and serve.
