Through exposure to sunlight, the skin is exposed to a type of light called ultraviolet radiation (UVR). UVR has been identified by the government, through a multitude of scientific studies, as a human carcinogen. This means it is a factor in developing cancer. DNA damage resulting from UVR exposure leads to mutations in the genetic structure of skin cells; this in turn leads to the development of any one of a number of skin cancers.
Another less life threatening effect of sun exposure is photoaging. Photoaging is a long term result of skin’s exposure to certain types of light, including sunlight, which speeds the aging process of the skin. It leads to a greater number of wrinkles developing prematurely, speeds the sagging of skin (especially the face), and hyperpigmentation.
To protect one’s skin from the sun, limit exposure to UVR rays by utilizing appropriate sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, and applying it properly. Also, protect skin by keeping it covered, and wearing hats to shade the face. Certain types of sunglasses are especially made to protect the delicate skin around the eyes from the effects of photoaging also. Look for sunglasses that have a UVR protection rating.
